The southern district of Alappuzha is often acknowledged as the “Venice of the East”, since this picturesque countryside boasts of an amazing network of inland waterways. It offers magical houseboat rides, which offer spectacular views of rural Kerala, otherwise untouched and inaccessible. The houseboats have all the comforts of a good hotel, including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cosy living rooms, a kitchen and a balcony for a lovely view. Most boats are poled by local oarsmen and you can enjoy the local cuisine mastered to perfection by the cooks and comprising mostly fresh water fish caught in front of your eyes.
An eight hour cruise from Alappuzha to Kollam over the Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes is very enjoyable. A short cruise to Pathiramanal from Muhamma is another backwater option. Pathiramanal is a small island on the Vembanad Lake and home to a spectacular variety of local and migratory birds. You can also look forward to the annual snake boat races in the southern region, held in August/September during the festival of Onam, which are a favourite with Kerala’s sailing and backwater enthusiasts.
Once you are done with the backwaters, you could explore the mountains, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and forests. Pookot Lake is a fresh water lake in Wayanad district that offers boating facilites and boasts a spice emporium and fresh water aquarium. The Athirapilly Waterfall, located in Chalakkudy, roughly 68 km from Thrissur, is known for its stunning landscape.
