Kerala Kalamandalam is a renowned institution that trains students in these performing arts. It is situated in Cheruthuruthy, 32 km away from Thrissur. The celebrated Guruvayoor temple, roughly 29 km from Thrissur, is one of the most sacred temples in India dedicated to Lord Krishna. Only Hindus are allowed inside and a strict dress code is enforced. The Irinjalakuda Koodal Manikyam temple, about 21 km away from Thrissur, is one of the rare temples dedicated to Lord Bharat, the brother of Sri Rama. The Ambalapuzha Shri Krishna temple near Alappuzha is famous for its principal daily ‘Prasad’, the ‘pal payasam’.
Mannarashala is a very famous serpent shrine. The main deity here is believed to have the form of Lord Vishnu and the powers of Lord Shiva. One of the rare specimens of rock-cut temple architecture in the state is to be found at the Kottukal cave temple near Chadyamangalam. Kozhikode boasts of unique places of worship. The four storeyed Mishkal masjid, the two Jain temples with elaborate carvings and the Parsi Anju Amman Baug, or fire temple, are all worth a visit.
Kerala’s ancient architecture shows a strong Dutch and British influence. The awesomely restored Bolgatty Palace was built by the Dutch in 1744 and is now run by the KTDC for tourists. Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, hosts the annual Thrissur Pooram that sees over a hundred elephants parading in front of the oldest and most sacred Shiva temple, the Vadakunathan.
