Destination Mamallapuram: Apart from its world famous historical monuments, Mahabalipuram , offers sun, sand and sea. The small town is strewn with historical monuments, rock carvings and temples, the most famous being the Shore Temple. And adding to that charm is the beautiful expanse of the glittering azure sea and golden beaches. The town has a fair share of restaurants and eating joints offering fresh, delicious seafood.

Charming Chettinad: If you are looking for something off the beaten track, Chettinad is the place to visit. The clusters of villages that dot the region were once the homes of the immensely wealthy merchant families – The Chettiars. The mansions of Chettinad are well worth a visit; they are immense and opulent. Intricately carved teakwood pillars, terracotta tiled roofs, antique furniture, porcelain and China, many hued chandeliers, Italian ceramic tiles in brilliant colours and patterns embellished with lotus motifs, roses and peacocks and large sepia-toned photographs of ancestors characterise Chettinad homes. Chettinad cuisine is absolutely delicious too, worth gorging on.

Tranquil Tranquebar: This little town, which was founded by Danish settlers in 1620 AD, lies on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. The most famous monument here is the Dansburg Fort, which houses an archeological museum. Another must see is the Zion Church, constructed in 1701. Then there’s the Governor’s Bungalow built in 1784, the Collector’s Bungalow and a majestic Entrance Arch that was built in 1792. For the religiously inclined, there’s ancient temple built in 1305 by a Pandian king.

Vibrant Madurai: The ancient temple town is home to the renowned Madurai Meenakshi temple. From the narrow alleys leading to the temple to the stalls selling everything from scented jasmine to bead necklaces to souvernirs and pictures, delicious flavours of filter coffee and freshly fried ‘vadas’, Madurai teems with life and vitality. The Meenakshi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Shiva’s consort, and is named after the daughter of a Pandian king. The temple ‘gopurams’, adorned with colourful icons of gods, goddesses, animals and mythical figures, soar up to a height of 50 metres. The temple is famous for its Hall of Thousand Pillars.
